Music Fit for the Medicis

Feb 18–20, 2022

The Met Museum wowed visitors with its recent exhibition “The Medici: Portraits & Politics, 1512–1570,” and the Medici moment continues in Chicago when the Newberry Consort presents Music Fit for the Medicis. Patriarch of the ruling Renaissance family, Cosimo de’ Medici was a wealthy banker and politician who also loved the arts. He supported painters, commissioned civic projects from architects, and created libraries. As for music, he collected and preserved work by the best Florentine composers, including Francesco Landini, Jacopo da Bologna, and Lorenzo da Firenze. The Consort will play music drawn from Medici collections, and the world famous organetto player Catalina Vicens is its guest artist for these programs. If you think you haven’t seen an organetto, think again. The instrument appears in the Cluny Unicorn tapestry Hearing, played by the soulful Lady. —Laura Jacobs
