Whether you like his style or not, most music fans have to acknowledge Bono’s grandeur. With U2, he’s sung about love, loss, and politics on a huge scale—music that tends to polarize. Born Paul David Hewson in Dublin, in 1960, Bono grew up a devout Catholic, joined a surrealist street gang called “Lypton Village,” and started a rock band at 16. The documentary Stories of Surrender, directed by Andrew Dominik, pulls back the curtain on his personal life, beginning in childhood. It’s based on his acclaimed one-man stage show, Stories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music and Some Mischief. —Elena Clavarino
