Mous Lamrabat has invented a world of his own: Mousganistan. This fictitious environment is one that synthesizes North African culture with Western capitalist iconography—a reflection of Lamrabat’s own experience. The artist was born in Morocco in 1983 but was raised in Belgium. Entirely self-taught (hence, free of formal training and its constraints), his approach to photography is unconventional. Lamrabat’s images, sharp and poignant, often place totemic figures in vast, surreal landscapes. A mesmerizing exploration of color and culture, they are humorous, meditative, and powerful. —Thalia Bonas
