If you count yourself a fan of The Queen’s Gambit, pay heed: its co-creator, Scott Frank, is back. His new show, developed alongside Tom Fontana, has all the interest and intrigue of the previous series, plus an iconic protagonist. Monsieur Spade concerns, yes, Sam Spade, now 20 years along from the events of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon. Played by Clive Owens, Spade resides in the South of France, an airy and picturesque landscape deeply at odds with his former hard-boiled San Francisco. But the need for a hardened, heavy-drinking detective abides. To follow Humphrey Bogart in any role is a daunting task. To replace him as Sam Spade would seem a doomed mission. And yet Owens excels, doing justice to what is perhaps the pinnacle character of the noir genre. —Jack Sullivan
