When Peter Bogdanovich died in January at the age of 82, it was a striking reminder that a precious breed of directors is disappearing. Maverick filmmakers whose personal lives are as intriguingly complicated as their films—and who take rapturous delight at the mere thought of being on set—this small group is now one fewer in number and disproportionately less in strength. If you need comforting, the newly available director’s cut of Bogdanovich’s 2015 screwball comedy, She’s Funny That Way, screening at MoMA, should help soften the blow dealt by his death. Movies themselves can be memorials. A Gordian knot of intertwined stories, the film has a cast ranging from Owen Wilson and Imogen Poots to Quentin Tarantino and even, in a cameo role, AIR MAIL’s co-editor Graydon Carter. It’s a rollicking testament to the tangled mess that life can become but also to how much fun it can be along the way. For that reason alone, Bogdanovich’s final film is the perfect farewell. —Nathan King
