Chatsworth House is known by some as the Palace of the Peaks. It was built in the 16th century by the stately Sir William Cavendish, and has been passed down through 25 generations. The 18th-century landscape architect Capability Brown developed its luscious gardens. Indoors, period antiques accumulated while the walls were hung with Old Masters such as Rembrandt and Veronese. The current Duke and Duchess of Devonshire have not only opened the grounds to the public, they have welcomed contemporary commissions that complement the setting. This exhibition sees 16 designers and artists—Formafantasma, Fernando Laposse, Ettore Sottsass among them—placing works in the palace and on its grounds. Think glass, stone, wood, and light. —Elena Clavarino
