According to the Italian siblings Roberto and Renato Miaz—also known as the Miaz Brothers—“We look to provide a visual experience that activates our awareness, that compels the viewer to recognize and re-establish the limits of his and her own perception.” With layers of aerosol paint on canvas, the pair has created new versions of Old Master paintings that are purposefully out of focus, reminiscent of a cloudy camera lens. At Maddox Gallery their investigation into vision includes 25 works. Characters featured include shepherds and saints, a misty Mona Lisa, and artists and noblemen by candlelight. —E.C.
