Meg Webster: Two Walls, 1984/2022

Meg Webster, Two Walls, 1984/2022.

Mar 31 – May 21, 2022
101 Spring St, New York, NY 10012

Almost 40 years ago, in 1984, the San Francisco-born artist Meg Webster had a solo exhibition at Donald Judd’s space on Spring Street. It consisted of two sculptures constructed from earthen materials—Soft Broch was made with hay and Long Gates with rammed earth (a technique that sees raw materials compacted into something dense). Both works possessed a space the viewer could enter: Soft Broch was like a haystack with an inner sanctum, while Long Gates was an architectural intersection the height of a gate. At the time these pieces were made, in 1983, the world was grappling with a nuclear threat from Russia. Today the world feels similarly at risk. These two works have been resurrected in the same space where they were first shown. —Elena Clavarino
