Can a love story exist without a beating heart? That’s the question Will Aronson and Hue Park explore in their new musical, Maybe Happy Ending. The protagonist, Oliver, leads a quiet life in his small apartment outside of Seoul. Most days, he listens to jazz and takes care of his plant—but there aren’t many other options for him, considering he’s a Helperbot 3, a model considered obsolete. Everything changes when he meets Claire, another Helpberbot, who asks to borrow a charger. The two forge an unexpected friendship that blossoms, against all odds, into love. “A captivating story of two outcasts near the end of their warranty,” Maybe Happy Ending proves that “even robots can be swept off their feet.” Darren Chris stars in the Broadway premiere, directed by Michael Arden. —Jeanne Malle
