Max Bill and Georges Vantongerloo: Crossover

Jan 27 – Mar 26, 2022
32 E 69th Street, New York, NY 10021, United States

When Georges Vantongerloo and Max Bill first met in 1935, they formed an instant bond of mutual admiration. The Belgian artist Vantongerloo was part of Piet Mondrian’s De Stijl movement, and played with curves and grids in two and three dimensions. The Swiss architect and painter Bill was affiliated with the Bauhaus movement, and designed minimalist watches and geometric abstractions. Vantongerloo died in 1965, almost 30 years before Bill, but the latter never stopped advocating for his friend. The intersection of their art and ideas is the focus of this exhibition. —E.C.
