Henri Matisse’s painting The Red Studio (1911), which is actually a self-portrait without a face, offers a strangely floating glimpse into the artist’s studio in the Paris suburb of Issy-les-Moulineaux. Enveloped in the bright red room are stools, crayons, a grandfather clock, and an array of Matisse’s own works, including ceramic plates. Organized in collaboration with MoMA, this exhibition brings together the art and objects pictured within The Red Studio and shows them alongside the famous painting. Two of these paintings are privately owned and have not been on view for 50 years. —Clara Molot
