“Cutting into color,” said Henri Matisse, “reminds me of the sculptor’s direct carving.” When we think of Matisse we think of ecstatic, splashing color. But this artist, beloved for his paintings, drawings, collages, and cutouts, struggled to gain the same recognition for his sculptures. “Matisse-Metamorphosis” presents more than 70 works from around the world, all focusing on Matisse’s influences—and practice—as a sculptor. —J.V.
