Masculinities: Liberation through Photography

July 10 – Aug 23, 2020
Silk St, Barbican, London EC2Y 8DS, UK

“I am not a singular identity. I think a singular identity isn’t very interesting, and I’m a little bit more multifaceted as a person than that,” said the American photographer, Catherine Opie, in a 2013 interview. In a cultural moment when a select few men have given masculinity a bad rap—both by committing crimes against women and by perpetuating sexism in all aspects of society—a new exhibition pushes back against this one-sided perception of men. Photography and films by over 50 artists—including Opie, Laurie Anderson, and Isaac Julien—express masculinity’s complex and multitudinous nature. —J.V.
