Martin Parr: Global Warming

Martin Parr, Benidorm, Spain, 1997.

“The fundamental thing I’m exploring constantly is the difference between the mythology of the place,” said the late Martin Parr, “and the reality of it.” In 1999, Parr traveled to Vietnam to document flooding in the Quan Tri province. He photographed farmers who had lost rice harvests—and many of their belongings—to the waters. On his way home, in 2009, he wrote, “I am on a plane flying from Bangkok to London, and despite my personal carbon emissions, want to announce my full conversion to the climate change cause.” He kept his word to the day he died, in December 2025. Parr’s first posthumous retrospective explores his, and our, relationship with the environment. —Elena Clavarino
