“I think it’s the responsibility of a designer to try to break rules and barriers,” said Gianni Versace, who lived those words. The “Gianni Versace Retrospective” at Musée Maillol celebrates the designer’s audacious vision with more than 400 original looks and hundreds of accessories, sketches, photographs, videos, and archival objects. Among the highlights are fashion photographs by such heavyweights as Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, and Bruce Weber, whose images capture the glamorous cosmology of the Versace universe. Organized around themes that shaped his work—Greco-Roman myth, Baroque opulence, pop culture—the exhibition shows Versace transforming fashion into spectacle. —Carolina de Armas
