The German painter Markus Lüpertz is more interested in process than in the final product. “What I paint is a chain of things,” he says, “one painting leads to the next.” Lüpertz believes there is a certain creative energy that propels him across subjects and styles. His dynamic brushstrokes and bold gestures give viewers a glimpse into his all-important process. “In painting there is nothing new,” he says, “only new artists who try to explain an ancient mystery: painting, in its time.” Vito Schnabel Gallery presents 30 works, dating from 1964 to 2021, by Lüpertz. —Clara Molot
