Born in 1877, the German expressionist painter Gabriele Münter had lost both her parents by the time she was 21. She and her sister decided to travel to America to explore the wonders of the Midwest. Returning to Germany in 1900, Münter began studies at the Phalanx School, in Munich, where she was introduced to Post-Impressionist techniques using brushes and palette knives. During this period she met Wassily Kandinsky, who soon became both her mentor and lover. Over the next six decades, Münter produced a diverse body of work. This retrospective features 100 paintings, drawings, and prints, creating a portrait of an artist unafraid of the new. —Elena Clavarino
