The sculptures of Marion Verboom fuse seemingly disparate and even contradictory elements. She combines references to different time periods and civilizations, to human body parts and musical instruments and mechanical objects. And yet Verboom’s practice is firmly rooted in art history. In “Da Coda,” her first exhibition at Galerie Lelong & Co. Paris, Verboom presents four columns that are comprised, like totem poles, of distinct sections, but each section is a different material, color, and form. She thinks of these columns as geological “cores”—cylindrical soil samples that hold archaeological data. Verboom’s smaller sculptures round out the exhibition. —Clara Molot
