“I am only interested in the ideas that become obsessive and make me feel uneasy,” says the Serbian performance artist Marina Abramović, “the ideas that I’m afraid of.” Her stupefying commitment to this principle placed Abramović at the brink of death during her early work Rhythm 0 (1974), a performance of six-hours duration that freed the audience to use her body as it pleased: one person held a loaded gun to her head. Over the past 50 years, in service to her craft, Abramović has subjected herself to pain and exhaustion both mental and physical. In the process she offers startling insight into human nature. This major exhibition displays critical moments from Abramović’s career through video, installation, sculpture, and performance. No two visits will be the same, as different restagings from her oeuvre will take place throughout the exhibition’s run. It’s a rare opportunity to catch up on Abramović’s astonishing work. —Nyla Gilstrap
