M+ Sigg Collection: From Revolution to Globalization

Nov 11, 2021 – Oct 6, 2022
West Kowloon Cultural District, 38 Museum Drive, Kowloon

With 33 galleries, three movie theaters, and a roof garden, Hong Kong’s new M+ is now one of the world’s largest museums of modern and contemporary art. For its November opening, the museum unveiled five shows, including “From Revolution to Globalisation,” a sweeping exhibition of the museum’s permanent collection. Comprised of Chinese art made in the last four decades, the show tracks recent cultural shifts, from 1978’s open-door policy to China’s rise as an economic superpower and its emergence as a global center of commerce. Also on view is Antony Gormley’s installation Asian Field. It consists of approximately 200,000 hand-sized clay figurines, all of them made for Gormley by people from Xiangshan village. He’s arranged them into an astonishing sea of humanity. —J.D.
