Lucy McKenzie: Prime Suspect

Sept 10, 2020 – June 6, 2021
Theresienstraße 35a, 80333 München, Germany

A master of applied arts, the Brussels-based painter Lucy McKenzie has said that female artists shouldn’t “just play by the rules,” and she doesn’t. McKenzie appropriates imagery from art, architecture, design, literature, history, music, and film, and absorbs it into her work. She’s painted mid-century Olympic athletes, 1980s pop icons, and has worked in music and fashion. Her speciality is trompe l’oeil, which she often deploys on museum walls and in installations, creating mesmerizing illusions in a nineteenth-century style. For the first time, the full extent of her creative abilities is on display, including paintings, installations, and objects from the fashion label Atelier E.B. —E.C.
