A master of applied arts, the Glasgow-born and Brussels-based painter Lucy McKenzie has said that female artists shouldn’t “just play by the rules.” And she doesn’t. McKenzie appropriates imagery from art, architecture, design, literature, history, music, and film and absorbs it into her work. She’s painted mid-century Olympic athletes, 1980s pop icons, and has worked in music and fashion. Her speciality is trompe l’oeil, which she often deploys on museum walls, creating mesmerizing illusions in a 19th-century style. McKenzie’s first U.K. retrospective, this exhibition includes 80 works dating from 1977 to the present. —E.C.
