Known by many as the most prolific Neapolitan painter of the 17th century, Luca Giordano worked so quickly that he became known as “The Thunderbolt.” And yet precision was never sacrificed to speed. Combining high drama with deep color, Giordano’s later works sing with grandeur. Five hundred years later, “The Thunderbolt” is receiving his first retrospective. A staggering 90 works are on loan from some of Europe’s most prestigious institutions. —E.C.
