“The notion of fragmentation, especially of the body, is prevalent in our culture, and it’s reflected in my works,” says the multimedia artist Lorna Simpson. “We’re fragmented not only in terms of how society regulates our bodies but in the way we think about ourselves.” Simpson’s collages nod to Cubism and Surrealism but use imagery from African-American visual culture. In 2019, she started work on her ongoing series “Special Characters,” taking women’s faces from fashion and wig ads in Ebony magazine and repurposing them in paintings and silkscreens. These works are now on view in this striking exhibition. —Elena Clavarino
