Lorenza Böttner blurs the boundary between art and artist. The transgender German artist, born in 1959, lost both of her arms in an accident when she was eight and rejected prosthetic replacements. Instead, Böttner worked with her mouth and feet. Creating art in public settings, she integrated the practices of painting, dancing, and performance. In her short yet productive 16-year career, Böttner explored concepts of beauty, gender, and identity.”I am an exhibitionist,” she said, “and I like it.” Böttner died in 1994. This is the first U.S. exhibition of her work. —Thalia Bonas
