Babette Mangolte landed in New York City a half century ago, shortly after graduating from L’Ecole Nationale de la Photographie et de la Cinématographie, in her native France. One of the first women to earn a degree from the prestigious film school, Mangolte hit the ground running, enmeshing herself in the SoHo art and dance scenes while further developing a New Wave-inspired style of cinematography. The idiosyncratic artistic vision she developed in Manhattan is the focus of a two-week retrospective at the Metrograph. Films shown will include What Maisie Knew, The Sky on Location, Calamity Jane & Delphine Seyrig: A Story, and her breathtaking example of structuralist film at its best The Camera: Je or La Camera: I. Mangolte herself will participate in Q&A sessions following select screenings during the first week. —Jack Sullivan
