Imagine amassing lutenists, flautists, and 74 opera singers with hip-hop dancers and Baroque instrumentalists. Jean-Philippe Rameau’s most renowned opera, Les Indes galantes (The Amorous Indies), is a 1735 fantasia that follows various European lovers across “exotic” lands—from Turkey to Peru to Persia—where they encounter, in today’s term, the “Other.” The French street-dance choreographer Bintou Dembélé updated the action in a short film from 2017. Building on that success, Opera Bastille staged the full production in 2019. Now a bold reinvention is coming to the Grange Festival 2025. —Elena Clavarino
