Many people know Alexander McQueen as the brilliant British fashion designer who died too young. His imagination was on show in dramatic collections that drew from history, art, and science, but about himself, McQueen revealed little. He was a private person who trusted few. Ann Ray, the French photographer, was McQueen’s friend and a rare confidante. She shot 43 of his collections over 13 years, capturing moments in the studio and at fashion shows. “You’re observing everything,” the designer told her upon seeing her early work. “I do,” she answered. “Just like you.” For this exhibition, Ray selected 65 photographs out of her archive of over 32,000 negatives. They will be shown alongside more than 60 of McQueen’s garments. —Jeanne Malle
