Some images never leave collective memory. For example, think of Steve McCurry’s photograph Afghan Girl. Her piercing green eyes and terracotta veil can be conjured up in an instant. “I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person’s face,” McCurry has explained. “I try to convey what it is like to be that person.” A photographer and photojournalist, McCurry has traveled far and wide on his quest to document the human condition—from Afghanistan to India, Cuba to the U.S., Southeast Asia to Africa. In the largest McCurry retrospective ever, 150 prints are on view. —E.C.
