No one approaches glass the way Larry Bell does. The California artist, who emerged on the Los Angeles art scene in the 1960s, is famous for his sculptures in glass, studies of linearity, light, and surface. “Although we tend to think of glass as a window,” he once explained, “it is a solid-liquid that has at once three distinctive qualities: it reflects light, it absorbs light, and it transmits light all at the same time.” Bell’s art makes use of all three qualities, creating novel and thrilling visual phenomena. Here he presents his “Open Box” series and his most recent “Deconstructed Cube” series. —Clara Molot
