Lang Lang, crowd-pleasingest pianist alive, parachutes in at the big barn known to London music lovers as the Royal Albert Hall (capacity 5,272) for a double-header of top hits by Camille Saint-Saëns. In the witty words of a critic covering the premiere, “starts with Bach and ends with Offenbach.” The whimsical Carnival of the Animals, written for friends and family, was never cleared for public performance in the composer’s lifetime but has since proved its mass appeal many times over. (With any luck, there will be encores, perhaps Lang Lang’s Lisztian rendition of “The Rainbow Connection.”) To accommodate what is sure to be unsatisfied demand, the concert will be given twice. Also on the bill: Wagner’s half-penitential, half-orgiastic Tannhäuser Overture and Ravel’s gossamer Mother Goose Suite. Mark Wigglesworth conducts. —Matthew Gurewitsch
