The marriage of Kyohei Inukai’s parents ruffled quite a few feathers. It was 1910, and his mother was a white Chicago socialite and his father a Japanese immigrant. Sharing a passion for art, they met as students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Kyohei Inukai was the youngest of their three sons, all of whom followed in their parents’ footsteps to become artists themselves. Inukai had a unique career creating and illustrating children’s books, etching woodcuts, and writing poems. This exhibition highlights his most notable body of work: vibrant and curvilinear paintings and silkscreens, many of which have never been seen before. These pieces embody the Japanese aesthetic of sumi-e ink paintings. —Paulina Prosnitz
