The 48-year-old Finnish textile artist Kustaa Saksi has been suffering from migraines since childhood. “At one point it will take over my whole vision,” he recently told the Financial Times, “then it vanishes.” A third of people who have migraines experience these auras, which involve blanks in one’s visual field. Though the pain during these episodes is intense, Saksi uses them to access the mind’s eye. He transforms the auras into textiles that are vibrant fantasy landscapes. These landscapes of consciousness—created between 2013 and 2023—are on now view in Helsinki. —Elena Clavarino
