After a 38-year absence from the stage, Gary Oldman is back. He’s not only starring in, but also directing and designing a revival of Samuel Beckett’s 1958 one-man play. On the night of his 69th birthday, Krapp, a writer, reflects on his past. Alone on stage, seated at a dimly lit desk, he listens to an old tape he recorded on his birthday, just after a breakup, 30 years earlier. In his youth, despite a chaotic love life and a fondness for alcohol, he had ambition and purpose. But now he is tired. The spooling and unspooling of the tapes, words, and silences becomes an embodiment of time and mortality. —Jeanne Malle
