Kinship: Photography and Connection

Alessandra Sanguinetti, The Necklace, 1999.

From fashion shoots to photojournalism, the subject in front of the camera is typically someone the photographer knows professionally or not at all. In this exhibition, however, affinity is a must. The six series featured here are based on a deep kinship between artist and subject, even though kinship is interpreted differently by each photographer. For Paul Mpagi Sepuya, kinship means exploring representations of queerness through portraiture. Jarod Lew, a Chinese-American artist, photographs other first-generation Asian Americans grappling with generational and cultural differences. Mercedes Dorame’s subject is not a person at all, but rather the native land of her Gabrielino-Tongva ancestors. —Paulina Prosnitz
