Kevin Tobin began painting bats during the pandemic. He views them as a vehicle through which to explore collapse, both inside and outside the body. He also gravitates toward bats because of their larger significance in the history of art. “To depict animals is in itself the most ancient genre of painting,” he writes, “And perhaps the least seriously explored over the last several hundred years.” In Tobin’s sophomore show at Lubov, the artist continues his series of bat paintings, and also includes more traditional portraiture. Because Tobin often works with light-reflective paint, the gallery will be installed so that viewers can see the paintings in UV light. —Sophie Kemp
