The Irish-born sculptor Kevin Francis Gray works in marble and bronze. In fact, it was his interest in different kinds of marble—statuario, Carrara, bardiglio, and marquina—that brought him from Ireland to Pietrasanta, a Tuscan town that is home to ancient marble-processing studios. Gray’s objective is to join traditional sculptural techniques to a contemporary sensibility. His figures often recall statues of the Hellenistic, Roman, and Medieval eras, but he’s not interested in classical smoothness and perfection. Gray plays with form, using textural distortion to convey raw emotion. In his first exhibition in Tuscany, Gray’s art is presented alongside the masters who inspire him. —E.C.
