When the South African artist William Kentridge set out to create his 2012 installation, The Refusal of Time, he decided to examine time as scientists do, as “a space in which everything disappears,” he explained, “a way of talking about death.” He thought a lot about Albert Einstein’s black holes. An all-encompassing work that mixes together film, animation, music, and graphics, the installation is the centerpiece of this mesmerizing exhibition in Copenhagen, and suggests an almost divine power. —Elena Clavarino
