Karla Black

Feb 8 – May 17, 2020
4700 Grand Ave, Des Moines, IA 50312, United States

Bath bombs, petroleum jelly, liquid foundation, glitter, cellophane, sugar paper, hand sanitizer. These are the materials—ordinary, pastel, floaty, girly—that comprise Scottish sculptor Karla Black’s ineffable large-scale sculptures, which sometimes sprinkle the floor with their face powder. Despite Black’s fame across the pond, where she is among the most popular of contemporary artists, the U.S. has yet to feature her playful works in a major museum exhibition—until now. This show introduces Black to American viewers with 15 of her most famous sculptures from the past decade as well as two new works developed specifically for the Des Moines space. —C.J.F.
