From 1981 to 1987, the artist Karin Kneffel attended the Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf, where she studied under the luminary Gerhard Richter. Kneffel’s paintings do show the influence of Richter, his blurring of mediums. As he does, she manipulates moments in time through layering and erasure. “My interest in making art is to produce a sense of doubt, something I have not yet really grasped,” she has said. In her first solo show in Rome in 25 years, Kneffel addresses human portraiture for the first time, taking inspiration from Northern Renaissance sculpture. This is a new body of work. —Elena Clavarino
