An opera meant for marionettes, now set on humans! Jupiter’s Journey to the Earth is based on a story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and the score is an adaptation of Franz Joseph Haydn’s one-act opera of 1773, Philemon und Baucis, oder Jupiters Reise auf die Erde, which was written for the Eszterháza Marionettentheater. It tells of how the gods have grown disgusted with mankind’s cruelty and therefore plan to destroy the world. In search of goodness, Jupiter and Mercury come down and, luckily for us, find it. Created by the little OPERA theatre of ny, this world-premiere production features puppets, opera singers, and instrumentalists. Like Mozart’s The Magic Flute, it is a singspiel—a delightful way to end the season at the Baryshnikov Arts Center. —Laura Jacobs
