Julie Mehretu

Julie Mehretu, Black City, 2007.

Until Jan 6, 2025
Campo San Samuele, 3231, 30124 Venezia VE, Italy

“The narratives come together to create this overall picture that you see from the distance,” says Julie Mehretu, describing her work. “As you come close to it … the big picture completely shatters and there are these numerous small narratives happening.” Mehretu refers to many different disciplines in these small narratives—art history, geography, sociopolitical drifts, her private life. This exhibition, which coincides with Venice’s Biennale, features 60 paintings and etchings by Mehretu and presents them with art by her close friends Nairy Baghramian, Huma Bhabha, Tacita Dean, and others. Though the show includes work from over the last 20 years, many of the paintings were created between 2021 and 2023. —Elena Clavarino
