In 1968, when the American artist Julian Schnabel was only 16, he traveled to Mexico and came upon a large self-portrait by an unfamiliar artist—Frida Kahlo (1907–1954). “I’d never seen her work before,” says Schnabel. “I’d never heard of her and I’d never seen anything like it. She was an unsung hero.” Kahlo has since been sung to the skies, but Schnabel never forgot that first meeting with her self-portrait, and recently he created his own rendition of it. Similarly inspired by Caravaggio’s self-portrait as Goliath, Van Gogh in many self-portraits (including the one with the bandaged ear), and selfies by Titian and Velasquez, Schnabel brings 25 new plate paintings to this solo show. It’s portraiture with a twist—and lots of crockery. —E.C.
