JR: Chronicles

June 4 – Oct 3, 2021
Duke of York's HQ, King's Rd, Chelsea, London SW3 4RY, United Kingdom

The French artist and photographer JR doesn’t look to lofty ideals for inspiration, he prefers to just look at what’s around him. As a young man in Paris, he walked the street, tagging walls with his moniker “Face 3.” He found his first camera on the Paris Métro, and began taking pictures of the city’s marginalized and voiceless, photographs he eventually used in his graffiti practice. Cut to now: JR’s black-and-white photographic canvases and installations have graced Paris’s Marais, Gaza, Nairobi, Rio de Janeiro’s favelas, and the U.S.–Mexican border. Saatchi Gallery presents JR’s largest solo museum exhibition to date, a survey of his career curated by the Brooklyn Museum’s Sharon Matt Atkins and Drew Sawyer. —E.C.
