An influential theorist as well as an artist, Joseph Beuys (1921–1986) was driven by the guiding principle “Every person is an artist.” He meant that everyone has a need to be creative. Beuys himself was creative in a wide number of fields—sculpture, performance art, teaching. Though many don’t know it, he also created exceptional drawings, and they weren’t merely studies for sculptures or other works. This exhibition, which presents 100 of Beuys’s drawings and watercolors, reveals the myths and dreams that fed into the rest of his oeuvre. —Elena Clavarino
