The eminent Austrian sculptor Josef Pillhofer, born in 1921, is not a household name like Rodin or Giacometti, but his art—cerebral, geometrical, abstract, yet nascently figurative—is just as fascinating. Pillhofer’s career began at the Graz School of Fine Arts, where between 1946 and 1950 he studied under Fritz Wotruba, who championed the aesthetic principles of Paul Cézanne. Pillhofer then won a scholarship to study in Paris, where he met Brâncuși, Giacometti, Laurens, Richier, and Zadkine. During this period of radical personal growth, he fully embraced Modernism. Pillhofer died in 2010, and would have turned 100 this year. In a centennial retrospective, the Leopold places his work alongside the inspirational artists who were also his peers. —E.C.
