Joel Mesler began his career on the artist circuit in L.A. Then he became, as he once described himself, “a middle-class dealer” between L.A. and New York. He scouted a few big ones—the stars Rashid Johnson and Henry Taylor, for example—and while doing so forgot about his own passion. In 2015, Mesler remembered, and began to paint again. He drew portraits of visitors at the NADA art fair—sometimes irreverent—and never looked back. Now his work, like that of his idols Ellsworth Kelly and Christopher Wool, often incorporates typography. On view in this exhibition are paintings that Mesler made after a summer visit to Château la Coste, where the cantilevered gallery is embraced by nature. —Elena Clavarino
