Joan Snyder’s career began in the 1960s, after she completed her MFA at Rutgers College. Early in her practice, Snyder created provocative works that addressed her mixed feelings about femininity. Glitter, thread, and other brash materials came together to create depictions of genitalia. Although Snyder later transitioned to gestural abstraction (her “Stroke Paintings” from the 1970s won wide acclaim), a loud, funky style remains a fixture of her work today. Snyder is now 83, and the new textured paintings on view in this exhibition glow with feeling. —Elena Clavarino
