Joan Miró: The Essence of Past and Present Things

Joan Miró, Les oiseaux de proie foncent sur nos ombres, 1970.

Rue Neuve 8, 7000 Mons, Belgium

“When I stand in front of a canvas,” said the Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist Joan Miró, “I never know what I’m going to do—and nobody is more surprised than I at what comes out.” Miró maintained that sense of surprise his entire life. Pursuing a path amid floating forms, he was never easy to categorize. Miró started making art early in life, after a short stint as a clerk led to a nervous breakdown. He has sometimes been called a Surrealist, but his work can also feel Expressionist or Fauvist. In this show, 100 artworks explore the historical periods and genres that influenced Miró throughout his career—from the Italian and Dutch Renaissance to Japanese calligraphy. —Elena Clavarino
