The Greek artist Jannis Kounellis was only just finding himself in 1960. Not yet 30, he began copying advertisements and signs he saw on the street, and stenciled numbers, words, and letters onto his canvases. One thing led to another and that year Kounellis ended up wearing a canvas as a garment. The middle of the decade saw a shift—found objects, live animals, fire, earth, and gold became mainstays in his artwork. By the 1980s, Kounellis was traveling all over Europe, exhibiting and performing in London, Eindhoven, and at Turin’s Castello di Rivoli. He died five years ago, at age 80. In this major show, organized in collaboration with the Museo Jumex, Kounellis receives his first North American retrospective in 35 years. —Elena Clavarino
